KILOWATT BERLIN
Building a distinct cultural language within Berlin nightlife.
I co-founded Kilowatt as a Black queer-owned electronic music collective and cultural platform in Berlin, with a curatorial focus on POC artists and Black electronic artists from Berlin and across the global scene. As Creative Director, I worked across creative direction, programming, production and co-curation, shaping projects from their earliest concept through to the experience in the room. Our programmes brought together club nights, musical programming, set design, panel conversations and community activations. I directed teams across set design, graphic design, photography and commissioned creative work, developing a visual and spatial language around each programme and creating space for artists, audiences and ideas to intersect.
Electronic music has always been shaped by Black culture. We built spaces that made that lineage visible while creating room for where it was going next.
Creating a shift beyond the dancefloor.
Across two years, Kilowatt developed a recognisable presence within Berlin’s nightlife and cultural landscape. Our programming moved between club culture, visual practice and public discourse, from multidisciplinary nights to panel conversations at Fotografiska Berlin. The collective received two Tag der Clubkultur awards, was selected as a Resident Advisor Pick multiple times, and was featured in publications including Mixmag. This recognition helped Kilowatt move beyond a recurring nightlife format into a cultural platform with its own creative language, community and point of view.
